Anneke Stern
Mezzo-Soprano
About.
Anneke Stern is a British-American mezzo-soprano known for her versatile range, rich tone, and comedic flair. As a rambunctious and outgoing child, Anneke enjoyed performing in any form, such as acting, musical theater, dance, and improv comedy. Anneke found her true passion for singing opera as a teenager, and after a few years of study at the Bard College music program, she began her training with current teacher Jane Eaglen at the New England Conservatory of Music in 2019. Through her undergraduate and graduate study there, Anneke has studied and sung music from every era and genre, with notable roles including the Grandmother in Barab’s Little Red Riding Hood, and Natura in Cavalli’s La Calisto.
Through opera, Anneke has enjoyed blurring gender roles by reinterpreting traditionally male roles. Notable examples of this include reenvisioning the role of Orpheus in a Berlin performance of Offenbach’s Orphée aux Enfers as a women in a gay relationship with Eurydice, or portraying Prince Orlofsky as an eccentric, gender fluid prince in Strauss’s Die Fledermaus who truly embodied the phrase “chacun à son goût”.
Anneke is excited to contribute to the future of opera and its relevance in the modern era. She originated the role of Leocadia Diaz in Mark Adamo’s workshop for his in-progress opera Sarah in the Theater, and has participated in outreach programs that partner with Boston area schools to introduce young children to opera. Most recently, Anneke was featured in WGBH’s recorded broadcast “Getting Into Opera” which will premiere later this year.
Additionally, Anneke has enjoyed extensive art song and concert performances such as the NEC Liederabend concert series, and was featured as the alto soloist in Music on Norway Pond’s production of Mozart’s Requiem.
When she is not on stage, Anneke enjoys traveling, crafting, and spending time with her cat, Pomo.
